Friends of the Dearborn Symphony is a closely linked but independent association that helps to support the Dearborn Symphony. More than 200 members of the group raise thousands of dollars annually to help support a variety of programs of the Dearborn Symphony and other music programs in the area.

Founded in the fall of 1962 as the Women’s Association of the Dearborn Orchestral Society (WADOS) by 60 charter members, the group has been recently renamed Friends of the Dearborn Symphony to reflect its evolution over the past 50 years and to acknowledge the fact that membership has expanded to include men as well as women.  Friends provides important financial support and volunteer services for the Dearborn Symphony, helps build knowledgeable and supportive audiences, and provides educational opportunities for students and adults.

As the largest single donor to the Dearborn Symphony, Friends has given more than $740,000 since 1974 —over $660,000 to the general operating fund, which includes underwriting an entire concert each year and more than $110,000 to the Endowment Fund.

The organization raises funds through many projects and annual events. Many of the events, including our very popular annual Home Tour in May, are carefully crafted to include a musical component, such as placing a musician in every home on the tour.  Friends also organizes lavish and scrumptious Taste of Music feasts in elegant and interesting private homes of supporters.  Members also sell Entertainment Books, sponsor Jewelry Exchange, and Bridgerama.

In addition to fund-raising, Friends hosts concert afterglows, dress rehearsal refreshments for musicians, and informative and entertaining “Concert Previews,” before most concerts. Friends awards scholarships to outstanding music students, and sponsors music clinics and workshops for Dearborn students. A stimulus to students and teachers, these events enhance musical enjoyment and provide models of excellence.

Join today—enjoy the excitement and satisfaction of helping the Dearborn Symphony, a treasured resource for our community!
